Installation of our Greenhouses
Our complete wood greenhouse kits come with everything you need for installation—greenhouse frame, glass (or other optional glazing material), corrosion resistant hardware, pre-hung door, caulking and instructions. Our greenhouse kits are partially prefabricated for efficient installation. The end walls are factory assembled and shipped in large sections. The doors are pre-hung. Roof and side wall components are precision precut, drilled for screws and ready for assembly prior to installation on your foundation or base wall.
We strongly recommend that the redwood frame be stained before the greenhouse is assembled. Staining will preserve the good looks of your greenhouse. The following tools will be useful during greenhouse assembly: Hand Saw, Variable speed drill with phillips screwdriver bit, Hammer, Drill bits, Tape Measure, 1” drill bit for door catch, Screwdriver, Pliers, Adjustable Wrench, Glass cutter, Level, and Caulking Gun.
Shown below are the basic steps it takes to put together our greenhouse kits.

1. Build your foundation and/or base wall to measurements provided by us with your greenhouse instructions. (We provide a measured drawing for you to build this.) Make sure your foundation is square, level and well anchored to the ground.

2. Our greenhouse end walls come to you pre-assembled. Roof and side wall sections are in precut pieces. They are marked and ready to assemble. We suggest you lay out the sections on a flat surface, such as a garage floor and then screw together at ground level.

3. Place the factory pre-assembled base wall pieces together on your foundation. Make sure they are also square and level. Often our customers build their own base wall out of stone or bricks. This should be discussed when you order your greenhouse and we will provide a measured drawing so that the base wall you build will properly fit the wood greenhouse upper framing.

4. The large wall sections (the factory pre-assembled end walls and the side walls that you have assembled earlier) are placed on the base walls and go together quickly, interlocking at the corners.

5. Set the end wall sections into place on the base walls; hold them and set the side wall sections into place. Fit the end walls and the side walls together at the corners by leaning the end walls outward and inserting the eave plates into the end walls. Our unique joinery will actually hold the sections together temporarily without fastening.

6. Slide the roof sections up the end wall sections until they drop into place at the ridge.

7. Bolt the ridge rails together, then loosely screw the entire greenhouse frame together, starting at the top and working your way down.

8. Mark and cut the door jambs, then install the pre-hung door assembly. Door jambs are left long to accomodate differences in foundations and customer-made base walls. Our doors are generally hinged to swing into the greenhouse. They can be hinged on the left or right to accomodate your needs.
9. Finish the structure with tie chains, braces, or roof beams depending on the model. Unlike other wood greenhouses which use massive wood pieces for strength (casting large shadows on your plants) we use engineering and design to complete the frame, carefully milling each piece. The greenhouse is stong, attractive, and functional.

10. Install glass in the roof vent and then install the vent before putting glass in the rest of the greenhouse.

11. Install glass (or other optional glazing), bedding each glass piece in a bead of caulk. Do the walls first, followed by the roof and then the end walls. Each bay is finished off with a barcap to hold the glazing and give the greenhouse a nice finished look. Barcaps also allow the glazing to be replaced if necessary. (Some greenhouse structures on the market slide glazing into place which requires disassambly of the greenhouse to fix broken glazing.)

12. The greenhouse is almost finished! Now it is time to add the finishing touches that will make your greenhouse unique. Add the standard interior gutter with drain tube. Then add rafter ties, exterior overhangs, ridge scallops, finials, and benches if you ordered these options.
13. Enjoy the greenhouse!!
